Sudbury Municipal Election Registration Starts In A Month & We Can’t Wait To See Who Is Running
The next municipal election in Greater Sudbury will take place this October, however candidates will soon be able to register and start fundraising and campaigning. This will happen in about a months time on May 2nd, 2022.
In order to run for municipal office in Ontario you must register as a candidate with the clerk of the municipality. The clerk will by law accept nominations for office on May 1st. However, because May 1st is a Sunday the clerk will accept the paperwork on May 2nd and thus will mark the beginning of municipal election season in Grater Sudbury.
The city has had the same Mayor for two consecutive terms and the rumblings of something or someone coming in and unseating him are starting to pop up. We will see though because with any election you have, the more candidates means the more likely the incumbent will succeed.
This will also be an election to watch in certain areas of the city. This will include the Donovan, as the area has appeared to have seen an escalation in illegal activity under the watch of the current councillor.
Another are will be in the Valley where Councillor Robert Kirwan is king. Some people on facebook consistently complain and aren’t happy with his attitude, but to say that spills out into the community will be something we shall witness on election night.
In Greater Sudbury and Ontario for that matter, there are no official affiliation for parties. This means that even thought the NDP, Conservatives, Greens or Liberals might be rallying someone to run in certain wards or even for mayor they will not be a candidate representing that party.
This will be an interesting season and one we look forward to talking about for the coming months. You will certainly want to check out our social media accounts frequently to see all the latest and greatest surrounding the next election.
